That version should be alright. Where are you getting it from?
There's also:
https://github.com/downloads/crooks/mixmaster/mixmaster-3.1a2.tar.gz
This has a few less dependencies on IDEA and updated default config
files. It's not in the official repository though so you should diff it
against your version.

That's quite an old version but if you're running the stable version of
your preferred Linux, it's probably patched. The nice people at Debian
take care of this for me.

IDEA is only required if you want to support it. Only users of
exceptionally old versions of PGP will likely care.

Sounds like you're on the right tracks. When you first get it working,
I'd suggest adding this to your mix.cfg:-
EXTFLAGS testing
This will prevent it from appearing in public stats until you're ready
to put it live.
