Apologies, that does seem to work, except when the message in 
question has a "Newsgroups:" header. Even if a mail2news gateway 
is allowed together with specific newsgroups:

#Allow mail2newsgateway
mail2news at mail2newsgateway.com

## Allows direct posts to alt.test and alt.anonymous.messages
## (only mix posts unless mail2news@ is whitelisted, too)
^Newsgroups: +(alt\.test|alt\.anonymous\.messages)$/



Maybe that "^" is the reason - I'll try deleting it and see what 
happens.
